About the "Play Wild" Series

The Play Wild series is a collection of children's books that are designed to create excitement about playing outdoors and exploring outside. Set in the forests of northeastern Minnesota–with towering trees, watchful woodland animals, and starry skies–each book makes the reader feel at home in the wild. Where I Fly: A Hockey Story, the first book in the series, tells the story of a special bond between a parent and child, which is strengthened by their shared love of the outdoors and the game of hockey. The second book, Where We Run: A Dog Sledding Story, follows a parent and child as they explore the wilderness with their team of sled dogs. The third book in the series, Where We Glide: A Canoeing Adventure (title pending) is the project on which the author is currently working, and is set in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Published in Ely, Minnesota, more titles may be planned in the future for the Play Wild series.

About the Author & Illustrator

K. M. “Kat” Allen grew up with a love for art, writing, animals, and the outdoors on a farm near Stephen, Minnesota. After graduating from Stephen-Argyle Central High School in 2003, Kat received a B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art & Design and also studied fine art in Florence, Italy. A career in marketing and design led Kat to Chicago, and later Milwaukee for many years. Now, Kat lives with her husband and children in Warroad, Minnesota, where she works from home as an artist, author, and illustrator. Her hope is that her books will inspire young readers to explore their own backyards and spend more time playing outdoors. Where We Run: A Dog Sledding Story

This delightful picture book with artistic and authentic images, tells a mushing story.  Poetically written with clever use of words and imagery, this book is a fun read and would be useful teaching basic mushing terms and information about the sport.  There are several pages at the end of the book that can help guide or extend learning.  *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by ITC EDU. - Diane Johnson, Iditarod EDU
